Luther Picture Gallery

The Lutheran Journal, Vol. 50, #2, 1983

In celebration of the 500th anniversary of Luther’s birth, I provided the publisher of The Lutheran Journal a series of photographs for their summer issue. They include portraits of Martin Luther as a professor, as a monk, and as a pastor; portraits of Luther’s father, Hans, and his mother, Margarethe; a portrait of Luther’s wife, Katharina von Bora; and the main portal of the Lutherhalle in Wittenberg named in honor of Katharina von Bora.
Other photographs which I submitted were a photograph of the Castle Church door in Wittenberg which contain the 95 Thesis, the Elector of Saxony, John Frederick, by Cranach the Elder, 1526; the Emperor, Charles V, a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer; a woodcut of John Tetzel selling letters of indulgences in 1517; woodcuts of religious relics by Cranach the Elder, 1509; and the cover photo which shows Luther’s room in the Wartburg Castle depicting his bible on the desk, paintings of Luther’s parents on the wall, and a woodcut by Cranach showing Luther as Knight George.
