"Luther in Death"
The Lutheran Journal, Vol. 65, #1, 1996
The year 1996 marks the 450th anniversary of Luther’s death. He
died on February 18, 1546, working until his last days. He traveled to
Eisleben the city of his birth to settle an inheritance disagreement between
the Dukes of Mansfeld. The cause of death was probably heart failure. This
is not surprising at the end of a life filled with work, conflict, stress,
and excitement. According to the great scholar, E.G. Schwiebert, there
are more details known of the death of Martin Luther than any other event
in history.
This article focuses on Luther’s illnesses and fears throughout his
life and his death at the home of his friend located two blocks from his
place of birth in Eisleben.
