Music has been an important part of the curriculum at Augustana
College, Rock Island, Illinois since the founding of the college by Swedish
Lutheran immigrants in 1860. Recently, the college acquired a 704-pipe
Renaissance-styled tracker organ. It is located in Ascension Chapel and
is one of only three such instruments built in the 20th century. The others
are located at Wellesley College in Massachusetts and Oberlin College in
Ohio.
This article deals with the history of the organ builder, Gene Bedient,
a native of Nebraska, and the unique instrument he built and installed
in the chapel at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.
