Bach Archives, Gohlis Castle - Leipzig

This pen and ink sketch, dated 1975, depicts the wrought-iron gate and tower of Gohlis Castle in Leipzig. It was constructed circa 1755 in Baroque style presumably by F. Seltendorff. The frescos on the ceiling were completed by A.F. Oeser in 1779. The building contains the Bach Archives which includes first editions of the works of Bach, manuscripts, illustrations and documents dealing with the history of Bach, eye witness reports and current research efforts. The sketch was completed by Weber at the site when the city was located behind Iron Curtain in East Germany.
