Augustana Observatory Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois Thursday May 15, 2003, 9:00-11:00 pm |
| The
observatory will be open on Thursday, May 15, 2003 from 9:00-11:00 pm for
viewing of the total lunar eclipse, the first since January 2000 visible
from the mid-west. The 14-inch telescope of the Carl Gamble observatory
along with smaller telescopes on the planetarium grounds will be focused
on the Moon.
During an eclipse, the Moon is slowly covered and then uncovered by the Earth's shadow, and when totally eclipsed the Moon is an eerie and awe-inspiring faint red disk. The Moon will first begin to be covered at 9:03 pm with the full eclipse starting at 10:14 pm. Mideclipse is at 10:40 pm and the total eclipse ends at 11:06 pm. Admission is free but the event will only be held if the sky is clear. |
