Workshop W1PER-based Problem Solving, Tom Foster (SIUE) and David Maloney (Indiana-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, Indiana).  PER means Physics Education Research.  After a brief review of some of the important results from the research on problem solving in physics, two alternative approaches to problem solving will be examined.  Participants will work in small groups to create and/or evaluate sample problems.  Time permitting, we will also explore the advantages/disadvantages and uses of the alternative approaches.  (limit 24)  Room E2013

Workshop W2LabPro for Physics Teaching”, David Vernier, Vernier Software.  In this workshop you will see that LabPro offers flexibility, power, portability, and ease of use.  Not only can you use LabPro as a computer interface, but you can also use it with a Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator. You have a choice of using LabPro with Windows or Macintosh computers, connected to a serial port or USB port. You can also take LabPro to your local stream or amusement park and take data—without a computer or calculator! (limit 24)  Room E2006

Workshop W3FrontPage, Scott Wennerdahl, Joliet Junior College Instructional Designer.  This workshop will cover basic HTML page layout and design using the Microsoft FrontPage editor.  This is the editor that is used to create and edit all of the ISAAPT Web pages.  Here is a well-written, inexpensive book that provides step-by-step instructions.  (limit 18)  Room E2003

Workshop W4Blackboard Course Manager, Scott Wennerdahl, Joliet Junior College Instructional Designer.  Blackboard is course manager software for online and Web assisted courses.  It includes four primary areas of functionality:
  1. Content management (personal information, course elements and documents, academic Web resources, publisher-provided digital material)
  2. Communication (asynchronous and synchronous collaboration tools)
  3. Control (instructor management utilities)
  4. Assessments (test and quiz capabilities, gradebook)

Participants will get a chance to see and use the many features of the software.  It is used in many courses at Joliet Junior College.  (limit 24)  Room E2001

Workshop W5WebAssign, Larry Martin, North Park University.  The WebAssign project is now in use by over 700 schools worldwide.  If you want to let your students do their homework (quizzes, tests, ...) on the web with immediate grading and feedback, this is an easy way to do it. Several dozen textbooks' end-of-chapter questions are available, but you can also write your own questions. We will cover the basics of coding our own questions and examine advanced techniques like incorporating JiTT (Just-in-Time-Teaching), Physlets, MathML, Labs, pre/post PER (Physics Education Research), and Peer Ranking tasks. We'll even get a sneak peek at the upcoming version 4!.  (limit 18)  Room E2003

Workshop W6Workshop/Demonstration of the Joliet Junior College Planetarium, Edward Eichelberger, Joliet Junior College Planetarium Director.  This workshop will show how a Spitz System 512 planetarium projector is augmented by a computer-controlled, multimedia special effects automation system with an integrated video projection system.  (limit 40)  Room F1001
