Workshop Details
Fall 2004 Meeting of the Illinois Section of the AAPT
Last update:  Sep. 27, 2004

At the conclusion of workshops W2 and W3, participants may apply to receive Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs).  Note that no CPDUs will be given for workshop W1.

This special pre-session workshop will be held at Illinois Central College
on Thursday afternoon  and evening and on Friday morning.

Workshop W1.  "Repairing the Illinois High School Physics Teacher Pipeline",  Illinois Central College, East Peoria, Illinois (five miles from Bradley University).  Although we have $500 of underwriting for this special session from the national office of AAPT, there are various incidental expenses that are not covered.  To help with these expenses, there is a fee for this workshop - $10 for faculty and $5 for students.  Here is a map of the campus.

Department of Physics, Western Illinois University (Academic Building - Room 212C)

This workshop will be held at Bradley from 10:00 am to noon on Friday, Oct. 15 in Olin 45.

Workshop W2.  "Loop 'em and Launch 'em with CPO Science Physics!", Darin Christianson, CPO Science, Grade Levels: 9-12, National Standards Focus: Science Content Standards.  This workshop is free.

Why does the marble stay on the track when it turns upside down in a loop? Where will a marble land when launched off the end of a ramp? Join CPO science (formerly Cambridge Physics Outlet) for a hands-on physics workshop with marble tracks and an electronic timing system. Perform experiments and discover physics principles through investigation. Enter a raffle for CPO Science equipment.

This workshop will be held at Bradley from 10:00 am to noon on Friday, Oct. 15 in Olin 37.

Workshop W3.  "Simple Experiments in Physics", Thomas Kuhn, Midwest Educational Representative, PASCO Scientific.  This workshop is free.

High school teachers participate in hands-on laboratory activities doing experiments that can be done in a high school science lab. PASCO will provide apparatus, interfaces and sensors to do the following:

Measure the Speed of Sound
Measure g
Verify Newton's 2nd Law
Find Time of Flight for Projectiles
Measure Induction
See Doppler Rocket in Action
Use Visual Accelerometer
Show Conservation of Momentum
Verify Conservation of Mechanical Energy
Look at Diffraction of Light by a Single Slit
Measure Period of a Simple Pendulum

The purpose of this workshop is to provide teachers with information and experiences that will allow them to conduct inquiry-oriented laboratory activities in their classrooms.  Special attention on how to involve students with disabilities will also be included in this workshop.
