Guidebook Program for Physics Teacher Education Majors
in Illinois
Illinois Section of AAPT
This program became effective on October 25, 1997.
If you are the advisor for the physics teacher education program at your school, notify
the ISAAPT president whenever you know of students who qualify for this program.
By action of the Council on July 18, 2006, the Guidebook Program was renewed
for three more years. At the Spring 2009 meeting the program will be reviewed and reauthorized if
deemed appropriate.
Whereas many, if not most, physics teacher education majors have:
- little access to good references while student teaching,
- to compete for good references even while on campus prior to student teaching, and
- a deficient knowledge of physics demonstrations and laboratory experiments, and
Whereas a guidebook program would provide a resource from the AAPT that
would help those who are:
- enrolled in a physics or science "methods" course,
- soon to be engaged in student teaching,
- physics teacher education majors,
- student members of the ISAAPT, and
- enrolled in a post-secondary institution within the ISAAPT zone,
Be it therefore resolved that the ISAAPT establish a Guidebook Program.
This Guidebook Program will provide one resource guidebook from the AAPT
and might include any of the following guidebooks:
- String and Sticky Tape Experiments
- A Potpourri of Physics Teaching Ideas
- A Demonstration Handbook for Physics
- Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching by Randall D. Knight
- Hands-on Physics Activities with Real-life Applications by James Cunningham and Norman Herr
The presentation of the gifts would include the following:
- A welcome letter from the President of the ISAAPT
- Membership information for ISAAPT and AAPT
- A listing of other available references such as the above and:
Physics for Kids--49 Easy Experiments with Acoustics by Robert W. Wood
Physics Made Simple by Ira M. Freeman
The Cartoon Guide to Physics by Gonick & Huffman
- A free one-year student membership in the ISAAPT
