Minutes of the Fall Council Meeting
Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville
Engineering Dean's Conference Room, EB-3072

October 14, 2000

The meeting was called to order by President Narendra Jaggi at 7:16 am. Those attending were Eric Peterson, John Askill, Kelly Roos, Chuck Schulz, Roger Malcolm, Conley Stutz, Roger Reeves, Debby Lojkutz, Curt Hieggelke, Narendra Jaggi, Duane Ingram, Ann Brandon, Diana Roth, Ken Mellendorf, Bruce McCart and David Renneke.

The minutes of the Spring 2000 council meeting were presented and approved. The treasurer's report showed a balance of $2,607.83 as of October 8, 2000.  The total amount collected for dues in the last year was $625.

Our section representative, Conley Stutz, indicated that his report of the Summer 2000 meeting is on the Web and in the Illinois Physics Teacher.  To facilitate communication via the Internet, the National AAPT office is putting together a list of laisons (one person at each school) that will include their e-mail address.

Roger Malcolm indicated that he will be retiring from teaching at the end of this school year and will need to be replaced as Publicity Chair and Section Editor.  Later in the meeting, the council appointed David Renneke to serve as the Publicity Chair, Section Editor and Webmaster.

Roger Reeves stated that the Fall 2000 issue of the Illinois Physics Teacher has been published on our Web site as a PDF file.  He will do it again next spring but was wondering if it is still needed beyond that since so much information is now available on our Web pages.  Conley Stutz stated that he still prefers the written newsletter to reading it on the screen.

A motion was made, seconded and carried (MSC) that Roger Reeves continue to serve as the editor of the Illinois Physics Teacher.  MSC that Ann Brandon continue as Representative to the AAPT High School Committee.

Although Gary Wolber was not able to be at this meeting, he conveyed the following message to the secretary regarding the Outstanding High School Physics Teacher Award.  Earlier this year Gary requested a
posting of the award through the Regional Offices of Education.  He also contacted the ISTA editor and requested that information for the nomination of the award be a part of their publication.  Nominees from last
year who are still interested will be contacted shortly.  He will be contacting council members early in 2001 with candidates for them to consider.

Duane Ingram brought up that the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) is continuing to develop transfer course recommendations for baccalaureate majors.  Alternative programs have been accepted for math, chemistry, and engineering majors, but not for physical science students.  After some discussion, it was moved, seconded and carried that an ad hoc committee be appointed to look into this matter.  Narendra Jaggi appointed Duane Ingram, Curt Hieggelke, Eric Peterson, Ken Mellendorf, and himself (to serve as chair).  Here is an elaboration of the issues as provided in a subsequent e-mail from Duane Ingram.

Roger Reeves stated that teacher recertification in Illinois is now in a state of flux.  Attending meetings like our ISAAPT meetings is accountable.  Starting in 2001, an organization like ours needs to be a "licensed" provider for Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU's).  An ad hoc committee was appointed to look into this by the spring meeting.  Members are Chuck Schulz, Roger Reeves and Carl Wenning.  Here is a follow up e-mail from Carl Wenning on this matter.

The Spring meeting of ISAAPT will be hosted by Principia College on April 20-21, 2001.  The theme is "Novel Methods for Physics Teaching, including ideas for lecture, discussion, assessment, and laboratory".  There will be some workshops scheduled for Friday morning and Saturday afternoon.

The Fall meeting of ISAAPT will be hosted by Joliet Junior College, Joliet, Illinois on Oct. 26-27, 2001.  Plans call for workshops all day Friday with none on Saturday.

Eric Peterson of the Nominating Committee presented the following list of names and positions.  All of them were elected at the business meeting of the section held at 1:23 pm.

Carl Wenning - Secretary/Treasurer, three-year term
Kim Shaw - for Council, four-year term, 4-year college, class of 2004
