Minutes of the Fall Council Meeting

October 26, 1996

The meeting was called to order by President Roger Reeves at 7:08 am. Those attending were Carl Wenning, Curtis Hieggelke, Eric Peterson, Ann Brandon, Conley Stutz, Narendra Jaggi, Stephen Weber, Robert Boeke, Tom Snyder, Dave Sykes, Roger Reeves, Roger Malcolm, Wei Qin, and David Renneke.

The minutes of the Spring 1996 council meeting were presented and approved with one correction: At the end of paragraph 7, change "Freeport Community College" to "Highland Community College at Freeport". The treasurer's report showed a balance of $3,258.21 and was approved as presented.

Conley Stutz of the Nominating Committee presented the following list of names, scheduled for action during the business meeting of the section later today:

Carl Wenning - President-Elect
Gary Wolber - for Council, one-year term, high school, class of 1997
Yan N. Lwin - for Council, three-year term, 4-year college, class of 1999
Stephen Weber - for Council, four-year term, high school, class of 2000
Steve Siegel - for Council, four-year term, 2-year college, class of 2000
Charles Schulz - for Council, four-year term, 4-year college, class of 2000

Roger Reeves reappointed Roger Malcolm as Publicity Chair and Section Editor.

Narendra Jaggi reported that 72 people have registered for this meeting as of this morning. 32 papers are being presented including 10 student papers.

The organizers of this 1996 fall meeting decided to have the Student Research Symposium this fall in addition to next spring. A motion was made, seconded, and carried (MSC) to provide monetary awards to the top three papers (as determined by a panel of 5 judges) in the amount of $75, $50, and $25.

Carl Wenning presented a tentative agenda for the 1997 spring meeting to be held at Illinois State University. (On Monday of the following week, this information was provided on the Web via a link from the ISAAPT home page.) MSC that the spring meeting be a joint meeting of ISAAPT, The Society of Physics Students - Zone 9, and TYC21 Project - Region 8

Eric Peterson officially offered to host the Fall 1998 meeting of ISAAPT at Highland Community College, Freeport, Illinois. MSC that Eric and the council president explore the possibility of a joint meeting with the Iowa and/or the Wisconsin sections of AAPT.

Ann Brandon annouced that the national high school photo contest will be conducted again in 1997. The due date in June 30, 1997. The contest will be held at the 1997 summer meeting in Denver, August 11-16.

There was discussion of the document "Preliminary Draft: Illinois Academic Standards". A committee was established to write a letter (due by Nov. 29, 1996) of feedback and concerns to the Illinois State Board of Education. Committee members (volunteers) included Roger Reeves, Bill Conway, Dave Sykes, Steve Weber, Wei Qin, Ann Brandon, and Roger Malcolm.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 am.
