Minutes of the Fall Council
Meeting
Illinois State University, Normal
October 11, 2008
President Deb Lojkutz called the
meeting to order at 7:10 A.M. Council Members present: President Elect
Tom Foster, Secretary/Treasurer Dave Sykes, Newsletter Editor Brian
Davies, Doug Brandt, Chris LaRoche, Rob Mason, Zak Knott, Ann Brandon,
Ray Bugayong, Tom Snyder, Ken Mellendorf, Elisabeth Langford, Tom
Carter, Don Reid, and meeting host Carl Wenning.
E-Action Items: Two items
were acted upon by the ISAAPT Council between the Fall and Spring
meetings via the Council List-Serve.
1. A motion to accept the
minutes of the executive council meeting held at the University of
Illinois on April 4 was made by Doug Brandt on May 5, 2008. The motion
was seconded by Tom Foster. President Lojkutz emailed the council that
the motion had passed on May 19, 2008.
2. A motion to accept the minutes
of the special executive council meeting held at Illinois State
University on July 10 was made by Tom Foster on August 5, 2008. The
motion was seconded by Brian Davies. President Lojkutz emailed the
council that the motion had passed on September 10, 2008. .
Secretary-Treasurer Report:
Dave presented the treasurer's report. A motion to accept the
treasurer's report was made by Ann Brandon and seconded by Ken
Mellendorf. The motion passed without discussion .
Section Representative Report:
Tom Foster reported on the future meetings of the AAPT.
Winter, 2009:
Chicago, Illinois
Summer, 2009: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Winter, 2010: Washington D.C.
Tom recommended that the ISAAPT
have a brochure available at the Chicago Meeting for Illinois attendees
that are not members of the ISAAPT.
High School Representative
Report: Ann Brandon reported that the High School Committee has
prepared a workshop for the Chicago Meeting. Ann also reported that the
application deadline for high school teacher grants through the AAPT (up
to $1000) is November 1.
Publicity Chair, Section Editor, and Webmaster
Report: In the absence of Dave Renneke, Carl Wenning reported that
he had talked with Dave and that Dave stated that his only report was
that the Web site was running smoothly.
Newsletter Report:
Brian Davies reported that 120 copies of the Illinois Physics Teacher
were made and that he mailed 112. Brian added that the total cost for
the printing and mailing was $138.
Outstanding High School Physics Teacher Award:
Cliff Parker was unable to attend the meeting but he emailed that he was
beginning the nomination process for next year's award.
Committee for the Distinguished
Service Citation Report: In the absence of Chairperson Diana Roth,
Deb reported that the 2008 Distinguished Service Citation was awarded to
Dave Sykes. Dave added that the 2009 Distinguished Service Citation
Committee will consist of Bill Hogan and Dave Sykes.
Nominating Committee Report:
In the absence of Past President Troy Gobble, Deb reported that the
slate of nominees to be voted on by the general membership at the
Business Meeting consists of:
President-Elect: Carl Wenning
Section Representative: Zak Knott
High School Representatives: Chris LaRoche and Shane Hanson
Two Year Representative: Bill Hogan
Four Year Representatives: Andrew Morrison and Brian Davies.
Current Meeting
Update: Carl Wenning reported that about 120 people (with about
two-thirds being ISAAPT members) had registered for the meeting
including five (5) walk-ins. Carl added that there was about $6600 in
gross receipts and he felt that the meeting would turn a profit.
Spring, 2009
Meeting Update: No report concerning the Spring Meeting was given as
no representative from Illinois Wesleyan was present.
Fall, 2009
Meeting Update: A motion to have a joint meeting with the IACT at
Illinois Central College in Peoria was made by Ken Mellendorf and
seconded by Elisabeth Langford. The motion passed without discussion.
Ken stated that the meeting should have a theme pertinent to Chemistry
and Physics Teachers alike and suggested an emphasis on lab innovations.
Carl added that a theme centered on Inquiry would also be appropriate
for both groups.
Spring,
2010
Meeting Update: Don Reid reported that the Spring, 2010 Meeting
would be held at Blackburn College in Carlinville. Don suggested that
the meeting be held at Blackburn on Friday and the Best Western off I-55
Friday night and Saturday morning as the Best Western was the only motel
large enough in the area and was about 10 miles from Carlinville.
Several members expressed concern that the Best Western might charge too
much for its meeting rooms.
Fall, 2010
Meeting Update: Chris LaRoche reported that he is doing preliminary
work on having the Fall, 2010 Meeting at Sherrard High School. It was
suggested that he consider having a joint meeting with the Iowa Section.
Old Business
1. Constitution and By-Laws
Revision: Bill Hogan reported that the Constitution and By-Laws
revision is ready to be voted on at the Business Meeting. .
2. Rossing Fund: Dave Sykes
reported on the status of the Rossing Fund in response to questions
raised at the Spring Council Meeting.
The
AAPT fiscal year is concurrent with the calendar year.
Interest from the fund can be used in consecutive
meetings.
The amount of available money from the fund will be
reported at each council meeting.
3. Recruitment Booklet &
Brochure Update: Carl Wenning reported that only a handful of
Brochures and Booklets are left.
4. Guidebook Program: Carl
Wenning reported that 11 ISU students will be eligible to receive
guidebooks in the Spring at a cost of about $25 each.
New
Business
1. Legislative Committee: Zak Knott reminded the council of the
committee initiated by Troy Gobble (Fall, 2007 council meeting) to
create a position statement (of standards and goals) in preparation to
having a response to state mandates. Carl suggested that the committee
meet at the Spring Meeting at Illinois Wesleyan. Volunteers for the
committee are Zak Knott (chair), Carl Wenning, Don Reid, Elisabeth
Langford, and Ann Brandon.
2. The
Illinois Physics Teacher: A motion to give people the option of
receiving the Illinois Physics Teacher via the Internet only was made by
Zak Knott and seconded by Tom Carter. After some discussion an
amendatory motion to send the Illinois Physics Teacher both ways for a
year or two was made by Elisabeth Langford and seconded by Ken
Mellendorf. The amendatory motion passed. Another amendatory motion to
send the virtual Illinois Physics Teacher to the listserve only was made
by Tom Carter and seconded by Tom Foster. The second amendatory motion
passed. Finally, Tom Carter called the question and the original motion
was approved.

The Council meeting was adjourned at 8:30 am.

Meeting

meeting to order at 1:00 pm.
A motion to accept the changes
to the Constitution and By-Laws as recommended by the council was made
by Bill Hogan and seconded by Tom Carter. The motion passed without
discussion.
A motion to approve the slate of
nominees for the ISAAPT Council was made by Bill Hogan and seconded by
Tom Foster. The motion passed without discussion.
The newly elected members of the
council are as follows:
President-Elect: Carl Wenning
Section Representative: Zak Knott
High School Representatives: Shane Hanson (until 2012) and
Chris LaRoche (until 2009)
Two Year College Representative: Bill Hogan
Four Year College Representatives: Andrew Morrison (until
2012) and Brian Davies (until 2010).
The Spring, 2009 meeting of the
ISAAPT will be held at Illinois Wesleyan. Host Narendra Jaggi stated
that the tentative dates for the meeting are April 3 & 4.
The meeting was adjourned at
1:10 pm.
