Fall 1996 ISAAPT Section Representative Report

  1. Section Representatives meet at the Winter and Summer national AAPT meetings. These involve (1) the Section Officer’s Exchange Meeting (along with any other section officers who are attending the national meeting), (2) the Section Representatives Meeting, and (3) the Council Meeting of AAPT which is only held at the Winter meeting.

  2. The recent Section Officer’s Exchange was held at the American Center for Physics in August as part of the Summer AAPT meeting at the University of Maryland.

    B. Khoury provide some background on the American Center for Physics which houses the national headquarters of AAPT, APS and AIP.

    An announcement was made of the one-time half price membership deal for members of sections who are not (nor have been) members of the national AAPT. This offer is valid until 31-May-97.

    Dave Winch demonstrated the Cinema Classics video disks along with the new teachers guide that is available on a CD-ROM. These were given away as door prizes at the end of the meeting.

    Tours were provided of the beautiful American Center for Physics building as well as a mini-workshop on the AAPT homepage.

  4. Discussion was held on the restricted distribution of information about members electronically. Abstracts may now be submitted electronically and program information is available on the home page of AAPT (http://www.aapt.org/text.html).

  5. A review and discussion of the national meeting format has been undertaken.

  6. Needed are nominations for national office, national area committees, and awards. All area committee meetings held at the national meetings are open to any member of AAPT. All attendees are generally encouraged to speak about any relevant issue. These meetings are generally held late in the afternoon or early evening.

  7. Section members are encouraged to consider entering the 1996 AAPT Apparatus Competition. There are two categories of awards: low cost (less than $50) and unlimited cost.
