SECTION REPRESENTATIVE'S REPORT
FOR SUMMER 1999 MEETING
OF AAPT AT TRINITY UNIVERSITY

Section Officers Meeting, August 4, 1999

  1. Ernie McFarland of the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada issued an invitation to everyone to attend the 2000 summer meeting at his university. The dates for this meeting are; workshops July 29 & 30 and paper sessions July 31- August 2.
  2. The introductions indicated that most of the people present were section representatives. Ann Brandon and I were the only ones present from Illinois at this meeting.
  3. The AAPT Executive informed us that they were forming two focus groups for the purpose of discussing the format and effectiveness of the meetings as presently structured.
  4. During the open discussion the following items were brought up:
    1. The tax-exempt status of the sections.
    2. Running contests for high school students as fund raisers
    3. Cost of running meetings and who pays
    4. Web pages. It appears that our web page is one of the best thanks to Dave Renneke.
  5. The officers were warned that a change in the AAPT constitution was being purposed that would change how the sections would participate in the policy making machinery

Section Representatives Meeting, August 5, 1999

  1. The meeting opened with the usual introductions, roll call, and approval of the minutes.
  2. Steve Iona, Section Representatives chair, reported on the travel reimbursements available to section representatives for the annual meeting, the Winter Meeting. Section representatives receive travel reimbursement only for the annual meeting and then only for three days and two nights as well as travel.
  3. Larry Bader reported on the activities of the PTRA.
  4. Those present were divided into three groups for the purpose of discussing the proposed changes in the AAPT constitution with the Constitution Revision Committee. It is expected that a final draft of the changes will be available for the Winter Meeting.
  5. The 2000 Winter Meeting will be held in Kissimmee, FL., January 15-19, 2000.
