Sandra Harpole called the meeting to order.
Berny Kouri introduced the AAPT staff directors and each made a short report concerning their function. Berny reported that there are about 25 people working in the College Park office. He reported that many of the scheduling problems encountered at the meeting were due to that fact that the U. of Denver people did not have rooms assigned until staff were ready to leave College Park.
Future meetings are as follows: Winter 1998 - New Orleans, Summer 1998 - Lincoln, NE, Spring 1998 - Columbus, OH.
He reported that about 31% of the membership are high school teachers and they make up 25% of the meeting attendance. 8% of the membership are two year college faculty and the total membership is around 11,000.
Warran Hein reported on the status of the Physical Science Rescue Center. He indicated that a Web page is online and that most of the materials in the Center fit the K-16 students and faculty. He noted that the AAPT homepage had been redone. He spoke about the application of copyright laws as regards the use of journal articles on the Web. He indicated that past and present authors only can use journal articles on the web. He reminded the group that section officers can get mailing labels from the College Park office.
Tom O'Kuma reported that a task force is considering all aspects of the Associations meetings. He indicated that there would have to be an adjustment on the fees for workshops as every meeting is losing money in the order of $30,000.
Ruth Strong indicated that the half price sale on memberships netted 113 new members. Also the format of the Announcer has been redone and individuals may send pictures by email for inclusion in it.
Maria Kouri encouraged everyone to attend the exhibits as the exhibitors deserve our attention as they help finance the meeting.
The Representatives voted in favor of a new method of computing reimbursement for the Reps to attend the winter meeting.
We were reminded that at the winter meeting we will elect a Section Representatives chairperson, secretary and two people to the nominating committee.
Approved a resolution asking the Executive Board to release email addresses of members of the Sections.
Approved a resolution requesting the Membership and Benefits Committee to extend the half price membership to Section members.
