will be held Friday morning, April 8, 2004. |
| Workshop
W1. (9:00-12:00) "Waves and Color - Mostly on the Cheap",
Ann Brandon and Debbie Lojkutz, Joliet West High School. This workshop includes slinky waves,
phone cord waves, people waves, sound waves, adding and subtracting light
and color. Each participant will receive a box of goodies and
handouts, related to waves and color to take home and use in their
classroom. Cost: $15 |
| Workshop W2. (8:00-12:00)
"Photoelectric Effect", Mark Schoeber, John Burroughs High
School. Participants will use
photoelectric effect apparatus and computer simulations to explore the
photoelectric effect as the basis for developing a photon model of light.
Modeling instructional techniques will be used. Paper and electronic
copies (CD) of all materials will be shared. Cost: $10 |
| Workshop W3. (9:00-12:00) "Inquiry
Based, In-class Astronomy Activities with Hands-on Equipment", Rebecca
Lindell and Tom Foster, SIUE. Nationally there are group activities
and pedagogically useful laboratory activities, but the synthesis of the
two is rare. To bring activities into the university lecture room requires
equipment to permit the students to kinesthetically explore their
pre-existing ideas and reinforce correct ideas. This workshop will share
our in-lecture activities and the education research underpinning their
design and evaluation, such as lunar phases. The content area is
appropriate to both high school and college instruction. Participants are
asked to bring a scientific calculator. |
