Joint Meeting of
The Illinois Section of AAPT,
The Society of Physics Students -- Zone 9,
and TYC21 Project -- Region 8

April 11-12, 1997

Illinois State University

Dear Colleague:

The Illinois State University Physics Department invites you to attend the spring meeting of the ISAAPT to be held in Normal on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12. This is a combined meeting of the Illinois Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers, the Society of Physics Students (Zone 9), and TYC21 Project (Region 8). We have an exciting line-up of speakers and workshops for you, in addition to "Showcase ISU" and paper presentations. The theme for our meeting is "Professional Development."

Our invited speakers include the well-know physics educator Dr. Alan Van Heuvelen of The Ohio State University; Dr. C. Robert O'Dell, principal investigator of the Hubble Space Telescope and a distinguished alumnus of our department; and Dr. Robert L. Fisher, co-director of the Center for Math, Science, and Technology (CeMaST) at Illinois State University. In addition, we have scheduled five workshops and a Comet Hale-Bopp planetarium presentation for Friday morning. The staggered starts of these activities will allow those who arrive after 9:00 AM to attend. Details about all of these can be found in the accompanying materials.

We would like to take this opportunity to call for papers and ask for you to pre-register for the meeting by March 15. Pre-registration is the only way we can be assured of having the appropriate facilities, and for you to make meal reservations. This promises to be an exciting and stimulating meeting, and space is limited.

We also would like to encourage you and your students to submit abstracts, and participate in the Student Research Symposium if eligible. Abstracts may be submitted either electronically or via hard copy following the format described in the enclosed Call for Papers form. The latest agenda information will be available at this web site after March 20, including the Schedule of Paper Session Presentations.

Judges are needed for the Student Research Symposium. If you are willing to both judge and attend all Symposium presentations, please so indicate on your registration form.

It is important that you make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. Attached is a listing of hotels and their conference rates. Please note reservation deadlines for conference rates.

When you arrive on campus Friday, park in the Bone Student Center parking lot (#82 on the Campus Guide and #4 on the City Map). You will not be charged for parking in this pay lot on Friday. When you arrive on campus Saturday, please park in university parking lot G85 E or G85 W, just north of the Bone Student Center parking lot. After you have parked, continue on to the registration desk in either Moulton Hall (Friday, #50) or the Bone Student Center (Saturday, #6).

It is our belief that we have a very interesting and productive program lined up for you. We look forward to receiving your registration and abstracts.

Cordially yours,

Carl J. Wenning
