from 1:00-4:00 pm

In conjunction
with the nationwide celebration of the 300th birthday of
Benjamin
Franklin, the Augustana
Chapter of the Society of Physics Students hosted a
"Franklin is Electric!" Open House. The free public
demonstrations were
aimed at upper-elementary-school children. Augustana students present demonstrations introducing the investigations and inventions
of Ben Franklin in many areas of science.
1. Electricity and Magnetism. There were demonstrations of
the Van de Graaff generator and discharge
tubes, in honor of Franklin's famous work with lightning and
electricity.
2. Thermodynamics. Demonstrations using heat,
cold, and infrared radiation, in honor of Franklin's invention of the
Ben Franklin stove and his studies of the radiation of
heat.
3. Acoustics. Sound and wave demonstrations,
including music played on wine glasses, honored Franklin's invention of
the glass armonica.
4. Optics. Since Ben Franklin invented spectacles we
honored him by demonstrating a variety of lenses.
