"Franklin
is Electric!"
Special Open House at Augustana College

In conjunction
with the nationwide celebration of the 300th birthday of
Benjamin
Franklin, the Augustana
Chapter of the Society of Physics Students will host a
"Franklin is Electric!" Open House. The free public
demonstrations are
aimed at upper-elementary-school children. Augustana students will
present demonstrations introducing the investigations and inventions
of Ben Franklin in many areas of science.
1. Electricity and Magnetism. There will be demonstrations such as a Van de Graaff generator
and discharge
tubes, in honor of Franklin's famous work with lightning and
electricity.
2. Thermodynamics. Demonstrations using heat, cold, and
infrared radiation, in honor of
Franklin's invention of the Ben Franklin stove
and his studies of the radiation of heat.
3. Acoustics. Sound and wave demonstrations,
including music played on wine glasses,
honor Franklin's invention of
the glass armonica.
4. Astronomy. Ben Franklin invented the notion of
Daylight Savings Time, and in his honor,
we demonstrate the
astronomical cause of the changing length of days with
seasons
and other astronomical phenomena.
