Highlights from 2005-2006 |
-
Field trip on Sep. 27-28, 2005 to
"Legacy of Einstein", Nobel Conference at Gustavus Adolphus
College in St. Peter, Minnesota. Speakers included
Wolfgang Ketterle, Thomas Levenson,
Kip
Thorne, Sylvester James Gates, Wendy Freeman and George F. R. Ellis.
- Special guest John Rigden gave a talk titled
"The
Questions Einstein Faced in 1905 and His Responses" on Oct. 6,
2005. He also gave an excellent public lecture at the
Bettendorf Public Library that evening. Dan Barrett and Tom
Foss did some physics demos from 6:00 to 7:00
pm at the library just preceding the talk. Here is a complete list of activities for
their
"Einstein's Big Idea" events in September and October.
- Construction of the cardboard boat
Heisenberg II for homecoming. The crew was Alaina Orwitz and Rachel
Adams.
- At three regular club meetings in
October and November, we watched the NOVA special
"Einstein's Big Idea".

Halloween Open House at the observatory, Oct. 28, 2005. The
main attraction was Mars. There were about 200 visitors.

Physics Open House celebrating the
World Year of Physics 2005 - Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, 1:00 to 4:00 pm
- Christmas party featuring liquid
nitrogen ice cream.
- There was a panel discussion on
the "Mission to Mars"
on Jan. 30, 2006.
- Attended
"Magnificent Desolation, Walking on the Moon 3D" at the
IMAX in Davenport on Feb. 12, 2006.
- Two hour field trip on Feb. 16, 2006
to visit the QC Elite Robotics team robot build site in Milan.
This year the robot is designed to shoot hoops and defend against
another robot that is also shooting hoops at the same goal.
- Picnic at the Sieglaffs - Sunday, Apr.
9, 2006 at 4:00 pm.
- Science night at Hamilton school on
Tuesday, Apr. 18, 2006.
