The John Deere Chapter of Sigma Xi is pleased to announce its annual induction of new members banquet to be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 in the Rogalski Center Ballroom at St. Ambrose University.  Directions are given below.

New members will be inducted in a brief ceremony, we will enjoy a delicious meal, and then have the following featured presentation.  It is jointly sponsored by Sigma Xi and the College of Arts and Sciences at St. Ambrose University.

"Noninvasive Chemical Monitors for Medicine and Biotechnology
 with Near Infrared Optics"

Dr. Mark Arnold
Edwin B. Green Chair in Laser Chemistry
Director, Optical Science & Technology Center
University of Iowa

Dr. Arnold's research involves novel chemical sensing devices based on optical transduction schemes. The primary focus is to build sensors capable of solving analytical problems in biomedical research, clinical chemistry, neuroscience, bioprocessing, biotechnology, and environmental studies.  Examples include:

Noninvasive blood glucose monitors based on near infrared spectroscopy
Nondestructive and reagent-less spectroscopic sensors to monitor bioreactor fermentation processes
Remote optical sensing technology based on radioluminescent light sources
Kromoscopy as a novel measurement code for ultra-sensitive analytical measurements in biological systems
