The John Deere Chapter of Sigma Xi is pleased to announce its annual induction of new members banquet to be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 in the Wilson Center at Augustana College.  Directions are given below.

New members will be inducted in a brief ceremony, we will enjoy a delicious meal, and then have the following featured presentation.

"Finding a Place for Space in the Auditory Forebrain"
Neurobehavioral and Neurophysiological Studies of Auditory Space Perception

Dr. Ian Harrington
Psychology Department
Augustana College

The philosopher Immanuel Kant appreciated in the 18th century there were few things more central to our experience of the world-and of us in it-than space. Today we understand that spatial perceptions, like all perceptions, are creations of the brain. Recent work by neuroscientists has been directed at understanding the rules by which our spatial perceptions are formed: What information is available? How is this information used? Where in the brain do these transformations happen?

I will describe some of the research that I and others have been involved in that aims to understand the neural bases of auditory space perception. You need only close your eyes for a moment to realize how detailed a representation of your environment you can build with your ears alone. The issue here is one that begins in physics by virtue of our having two laterally displaced receivers (our ears) and that ends in psychology with our subjective spatial perceptions. In between the physics and psychology is a whole lot of neuroscience. I will attempt to describe some aspects of each of these perspectives as they pertain to our awareness of the auditory scene around us.
