The John Deere Chapter of Sigma Xi
is pleased to announce its annual induction of new members banquet to be
held on Thursday, December 1, 2011 in the Wilson Center at
Augustana College. Directions
are given below.
New members will be inducted in a brief
ceremony, we will enjoy a delicious meal, and then
have the following featured presentation. |

"Undergraduate Research in Neutron-rich
Atomic Nuclei"
Dr. Nathan Frank
Department of Physics and Astronomy

From radioactive carbon dating to the
natural abundance of the elements, the physics of the atomic nucleus is
all around us. It is remarkable how a physical system of 10-15 meters in
size composed of neutron and protons so strongly determines the
structure of our universe. What is the structure of such a system? What
are the forces that hold it together? How do we learn about the atomic
nucleus? These are the questions that intrigue me as an experimental
nuclear physicist. One way to
answer these questions is to study atomic nuclei that you cannot find in
a typical scoop of dirt in your backyard. Of particular interest in the
field are nuclei that have extreme ratios of neutrons to protons since
these nuclei demonstrate different properties than nuclei in your own
scoop of dirt. These nuclei are so excited that they emit a neutron and
by measuring the resulting fragments we can reconstruct the extreme
nucleus. These extreme nuclei are produced at the National
Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University where
the neutrons are detected in a detector built by the undergraduate
research collaboration that I am a member of. In this talk I will
describe this research, the undergraduate collaboration, and the work of
my current and former students. I will also cover experimental results
and equipment development. |
