Research Presentations - 2005

Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005
Science Building Room 102, Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois

New associate members of the chapter presented either a 10 minute talk or a poster that described the research that they have been doing.  55 people attended this event.

The third program of the year, "NOVA ScienceNow - Top Science Stories of 2005" featured these four topics - discovery of the 10th planet, the twin prime controversy, the pandemic bird flu, and stem cell update.  Four panelists - Robert Mitchell, Douglas Nelson, Matthew Halfhill and Kristin Douglas - discussed these topics and fielded questions from the audience.  The program was held at Rivermont Collegiate School in Bettendorf, Iowa Tuesday, March 14, 2006.

For our Spring meeting, on Sunday, April 30, 2006 at 7:00 pm we had a Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Talat Rahman of the Physics Department at Kansas State University, giving a public lecture titled "Should We Tell our Daughters to Become Scientists?"  This lecture will be presented at Augustana College in Science 102.  The public is invited to attend.

On Monday, May 1, at 10:00 am, Dr. Rahman highlighted her area of research and gave a lecture titled "Science at the Nanoscale: Building Functional Materials Atom by Atom".  It was held in Science 304 at Augustana, timed to coincide with the regular meeting time of two physics classes.
