 Comments on Test 3

  • Section 01:  Wednesday, Feb. 22, 9:00-11:00.   Section 02:  Monday, Feb. 20, 12:00-2:00.
  • Test 3 covers Chapters 19-22 except as indicated:  Omit the following sections: 19-8, 20-11.  Add:  18-7 (alternating current)
  • Review your notes and the Web notes.
  • Look over the homework.  Often test questions are slight variations of the homework.
  • Review the chapter summaries.  If you have time, make out your own equation sheet, identifying all the symbols and the names of the equations, if any.
  • Equations and constants will be provided - but review what all of the symbols represent.  You will need to remember prefixes - pico, nano, micro, milli, kilo, mega, giga, tera.
  • Types of questions:  multiple choice, problems, definitions, descriptive (how does this work...)
  • Can you apply Kirchhoff's rules to a network of resistors and batteries?  Be able to apply the Lorentz force law (F = qE + qv x B).
  • Have you mastered the various right-hand and left-hand rules?
  • How do motors, galvanometers, generators, loudspeakers, transformers, ... work?
  • There will be one or two questions about the life and work of Nikola Tesla.  Video highlights are on the Web.
  • Phasor diagram for an RLC circuit ...
  • Recall the contributions of Oersted, Faraday, Lenz, Maxwell, ...
  • Describe electromagnetic waves - drawings, equations for E and B, speed, names (radio, x-ray, ...), energy, Save (average Poynting vector).
Here are some practice problems for Test 3.  The solutions to these problems are posted on the bulletin board that is in the hallway next to room 118.  I would suggest that you try working them first before looking at the solutions.
