Examples of Interference

PH 202 - Basic Physics II

Fluids, Wave Phenomena, Sound, Thermodynamics and Optics

Winter 2000-2001

The topics covered in this course include (a) fluids, oscillations, waves (in general), sound waves, (b) temperature, heat, kinetic theory of gases, entropy, and (c) electromagnetic waves, polarization, reflection and refraction, images with mirrors and lenses, optical instruments, interference, and diffraction.
  • Except for Set 6, homework exercises and problems are due on Fridays at 4:00 pm.  Either turn them in at class or put them in the PH 202 box in Science 201.  Homework turned in by noon on the following Monday will receive 80% credit.  Homework turned in after noon on Monday will not be graded.  Solutions will be posted on the bulletin board near Science 118.
  • Discussion exercises and problems are due at the beginning of your Discussion period.
As indicated in the syllabus, the Final Exam will on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 9:00 - 11:00 am.  It will be a unit exam covering Chapters 34-37 (optics), worth 20% of your course grade.  The format will be the same as it was for Test 2.
Click to see a larger image You received a free gift on Feb. 14 - a transmission diffraction grating.  Please bring it with you to the exam on Feb. 22.  You may need it.  Then take it home and share the fun of looking through it.  The photo on the left was taken on Feb. 5, 2001.  As part of their outreach program, physics club members Chris Gallick, Derek Strom and Pat Watts are showing the 6th graders at Butterworth school in Moline some optics and laser demonstrations.  Note the two boys looking at the camera through their diffraction grating, a unit identical to your gift.  Imagine what they saw when the flash went off !
