PH 202 - Basic Physics II
Fluids, Wave Phenomena, Sound, Thermodynamics and Optics

Winter 2002-2003

The topics covered in this course include (a) fluids, oscillations, waves (in general), sound waves, (b) temperature, heat, kinetic theory of gases, entropy, and (c) electromagnetic waves, polarization, reflection and refraction, images with mirrors and lenses, optical instruments, interference, and diffraction.  Bottom of page.
There will be a review session lead by Kristin Hanekamp on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8:00 pm in Science 203.  There will not be a help session on Thursday evening this week.  Also, there will not be a WebAssign problem set on Friday this week.

  • Use WebAssign for the Friday homework.  Please read the Guide to WebAssign for instructions on logging in and how to proceed.  Look at this spreadsheet to check out the 1% tolerance of WebAssign answers.  In general, express answers to at least 3 significant figures.

  • Do the homework for Discussion on paper.  You should have it completed when you come to your section.  We will go over the solutions of these problems, often coupled with demonstrations.  We will solve one or two other problems, as time permits.  Hand in your papers at the end of the period.

*Unannounced Exercise or Problem from the book - done during Discussion.
Even - answers to selected even-numbered exercises and problems.

Hint for Problem 17.30.  Draw the phasor diagram showing the two waves and their sum.  Then use the law of cosines.  It is listed adjacent to the green triangle on page A-9 (Appendix E).

Hint for Problem 18.7.  Let t1 = the time for the stone to fall.  Let t2 = the time for the sound to travel up the well.

Note:  Solutions to the Friday homework are posted on the bulletin board in the hallway near the window of room 118.  The board is updated on Mondays.

Reminder - Test 1 will be on Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 10:00-11:15 am. It covers chapters 15-18. Information such as constants and the summary equations (without descriptions) will be provided. Some questions will be multiple choice. There will be several multi-part problems requiring computation.  There will be some choice of problems (e.g. do four out of five).  Review all the assigned problems and textbook examples.  Look at a few others you haven't done before.
