My pen and ink sketch shows the old St. Paul's Lutheran Church erected in 1835. A new church replaced it in 1895. Daniel Scherer founded this congregation and used it as a base of operations for far flung missionary travels. The first Lutheran church assembly in Illinois was held here in 1835. In 1846, the first Illinois Synod was organized. The first Lutheran college in Illinois, Hillsboro college, was begun here in 1846. It was the predecessor of both Augustana and Carthage Colleges.  Here is the current St. Paul's Lutheran Church Web site.
