St. Stephen's is one of three congregations of Danish origin which became members of the Illinois Synod in 1962. This church typifies several traits of Danish church architecture. The stepped gable, the Thorvaldsen statue of Christ over the altar, and a model ship suspended at the nave entrance are all Danish features. The parish benefited from the long ministry of Adam Dan, a famous Danish-American author, poet and churchman. Like many other Illinois Synod congregations, it is now serving primarily a Black constituency.
