Physics 202 is the second semester of a three-semester sequence in basic calculus-based physics. Topics covered include: fluid dynamics, simple harmonic motion, waves, thermodynamics, optics, and electromagnetic radiation. In addition to the 3 weekly lectures there is also a weekly lab and discussion period.
Over the course of the semester we will use the “Physics Active Learning”™ (PAL) system of pre-class, in-class and discussion-period exercises. Before each class you must complete the assigned reading and the assigned problems via WebAssign. In class you will work in groups to complete short exercises and problems. In each discussion section you will work in groups on longer and more complex problems. Pre-class exercises are due before class starts and in-class exercises are due at the end of class. No late exercises will be accepted. Attendance to lab, discussion and lecture is mandatory, but you can miss up to three pre-class and in-class exercises.
It is important to show all of your work and explain all of your answers in everything you hand in. Full credit is only given for work in which all the steps are shown in a neat and easily readable manner (for non-WebAssign problems). For qualitative questions, all answers must be in clear, direct, complete sentences.
Required Materials
Each student will need a copy of the textbook, “Fundamentals of Physics”, by Halliday, Resnick and Walker, 7th edition, which most of you should have from PH 201. A calculator will also be necessary. Please bring book, calculator and pen or pencil to each class.
Your grade will be based on 6 separate items each weighted as follows:
Exams (2): 30% (15% each)
Final: 20%
Lab: 20%
Discussion: 10%
Pre-class Homework: 10%
In-class PAL and Quizdom: 10%
Missed exams can only be made up with an official excuse. If you must miss a test or class, please see me before the class or exam you have to miss.
Cheating, of course, is not permitted. Students may work together and discuss the material in some cases but each student must do his or her own work and turn in a separate assignment. Direct copying will result in a grade of zero for the assignment and serious cheating can result in an “F” for the course.
If you have any questions or problems during the semester you can send me email at the above address, visit during my office hours, or make an appointment for a meeting. Please also feel free to talk to me before and after class or stop by my office if you would like to discuss something.
